The Crowning by Zadok
“And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon,” 1 Kings 1:39.
Have you heard of FOMO? It is the fear-of-missing-out. The term was coined almost twenty years ago to describe the phenomenon of constantly feeling like you have missed out on something because of what you see on social media. As I read about the anointing of Solomon, I feel like I have missed out because I have never experienced anything like this. But as we will see, we really have not missed anything.
Certain themes run throughout the Bible and anointing was one such theme. Physically, an anointing involves the pouring of a specially prepared oil over the surface of a person or an object. When something was anointed, it was set apart, dedicated to a particular purpose. This could be for special service in the Temple, for a king or for a priest. It was even done for the benefit of guests in a home. It basically indicated a special status as seen through the eyes of God, the people or individuals. This idea began to take shape in the Old Testament to point toward a special king, a special deliverer who would be anointed, set apart. This Messiah, or in the New Testament, Christ, would come and save His people. In our passage above, Solomon was anointed to be the next king of Israel. He was the son in the flesh of David, pre-figuring the Son who would come from David as the One anointed by God.
Through the Scriptures and through faith, we experience the anointing and live under the kingship of the One who fulfilled all anointings, Jesus Christ. We stand in the privileged place of fulfillment. We are not missing out on anything.
