The Confusion in Lystra

“Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes,
and ran in among the people, crying out, and saying, Sirs, why do ye these things?
We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from
these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea,
and all things that are therein,” Acts 14:14, 15.

“The Bible may hurt you with the truth, but it will never comfort you with a lie.”—Sermon Quotes

Barnabas and Paul boldly preached the gospel in Iconium and Lystra and many believed the gospel and were converted. Yet, among the religious Jews, there were some who refused to accept the truth. So, they stirred up Greeks who were steeped in mythology to cause a riot against the gospel preachers. Imagine the new converts watching all the chaos unfold soon after their joyous moment of salvation.

There are many who would prefer to be soothed by myths and twisted truths than to be offended by pure biblical truth. In this instance, those who knew the Old Testament well were warring against the truth and found it suitable to use Greek mystics to fight against those preaching

the Word of God. The Word was preached by Barnabas and Paul, and many found clarity and peace with the message of the gospel. But Satan was none too pleased and acted quickly to bring great chaos and turmoil to these faithful preachers.

We may face similar events in our lives as we preach the gospel to our friends and neighbors. Satan will work quickly to cause confusion when the clear truths of God’s Word are declared. It is still possible for faithful Christians to be confused by the myths that Satan spews in the world today. Christians must have a clear understanding of the Word of God so as not to embrace confusing ideas spun out by Satan’s lies.

REFLECTION
Christians must have a firm grasp of biblical truth
to avoid unnecessary confusion.
