The Lord’s Approval
“And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; behold, I have done according to thy words,” 1 Kings 3:11, 12.
John asked his teenage son what he wanted for his birthday. The answer was, “A day with you, Dad. Just the two of us.” What they did, whether fishing, a baseball game or hiking did not matter; he just wanted the day with his dad. John was so touched; he planned a jam-packed day for them. He also bought special gifts which his son had not requested and spent extra money making the day the best it could be.
Young King Solomon continually pleased God. His actions, prayers and humility showed devotion to his Lord. He loved the Lord and walked in the statutes of his father, David (1 Kings 3:3). Solomon could have asked for greatness, riches and power, but instead he asked for wisdom. He requested an understanding heart, good judgment and discernment like his father. In 1 Samuel 16:18, Saul’s servant described young David as “prudent in matters…and the Lord is with him.” David was a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22). Solomon was following the footsteps of his earthly father and his Heavenly Father.
Solomon’s answer pleased the Lord, who responded to the discernment young Solomon was already showing. God filled him with unprecedented wisdom and understanding. He also gave him things he could have asked for, things most people in power and position would have requested. God gave him unprecedented riches and honor. The Lord Himself described Solomon’s lavishness as historical. Solomon’s wisdom, understanding, riches and honor was never and has since never been seen in all of history. In addition, if Solomon walked in the way of the Lord, he would receive a long life. That is lavish love from the Father!
THOUGHT
The Lord wants to shower us with wisdom. We need just ask.
