The Eunuch’s Question

“The young Muslim listened carefully as we spoke of Jesus. His facial expression seemed to display a certain delight at hearing the recitation of John 3:16. I took that cue to elaborate more upon the “Gift of God” as best I could, in hopes of the man’s heart being open to the gospel. I cannot forget the words he spoke to me at the moment. It happened that while he was attending college in General Santos City, a roommate shared his faith with him, often referencing the same scripture. His reply at hearing it once again was, ‘I remembered the numbers, but I forgot the words.’ And as he remembered, he embraced them.”—Memoirs of a Missionary, Glen Knight

Many people remember verses from the Bible, mostly from childhood. It may have been a mother or father or a Sunday School or Bible School teacher who had taught them. Some people have learned verses in many other ways, including personal study or attendance in parochial schools, seminaries and such. Pastors often challenge the people in the churches to learn verses. I remember very well, those faithful men who helped to set me on a course of regular reading and study, carried on now for more than fifty years. But there is a key to understanding what we read of the Bible, and it relates to the who of the Bible as much or more than to the what. Essentially, our question, ‘What is that talking about?’ may be better if we ask, ‘Who is it talking about?’ To consider that God’s Word is Christocentric, in other words, it focuses our attention throughout on Jesus Christ, will undoubtedly shed a full understanding upon its profound truths.

An Amazing Truth! To declare God’s Word is to declare the story of Jesus!
