Prayer for His Own

Reading the Lord’s Prayer of John 17 has always been a wow passage for me. I understand that Jesus would pray for Peter and John and the rest of the apostles, but for me? But this is exactly what He said in verse 20. This event happened when Jesus was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane just hours before He would hang on the cross paying for my sins and the sins of the whole world. Instead of thinking of Himself, He was thinking of me. Wow!

What did Jesus pray for all believers? He prayed that His Father would keep or guard you while you are in the world (verse 12). He prayed that the Father would keep you from evil (verse 15). He prayed that you would be sanctified by God’s Word (verse 17). He prayed that you would have the same relationship with the Father as He has (verse 22). He prayed that you would be with Him and behold His glory (verse 24). He prayed that the same love with which the Father loved Him would be in you (verse 26). Now that is a great prayer Jesus prayed for you and me!

I think Jesus is still praying this way for you as the Scriptures tells you He continually makes intercession for you (Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25). Jesus speaks on your behalf petitioning the Father to take care of you and to help you grow closer to Him. It is comforting to know that people are praying for you, but is it not even more so to know that Jesus is praying for you?

Thought: What a comfort to know that Jesus is praying for you!
