The People Request a King
“And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations,” I Samuel 8:5.
Israel is God’s chosen nation, a special and holy people to the Lord. What a precious thought to be known as the chosen people of God. “For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth” (Deuteronomy 7:6). This exclusive position would definitely have great blessings and privileges, but also hold greater responsibility and accountability as the people of God.
The Israelites recognized that Samuel was becoming too old to judge and his sons were corrupt in their judgment. Although these were legitimate concerns, desiring to have an earthly king residing over them such as the other nations was not the answer for the holy people of God. He alone was to be their King. “Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God” (Isaiah 44:6). Israel was to be set apart, distinct from the other nations.
For those that are members of the Lord’s New Testament churches, we too are to be set apart for the Lord. I Peter 2:9 calls us a peculiar people meaning we are to be different from the world around us. Do not attempt to conform to those around you. Separate yourself from the wicked thoughts and ideas that are now prevalent in politics, universities and even many church organizations. May we be transformed and renewed each day by the Word of God and His Holy Spirit to guide us to all truth.
REFLECTION: “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you” (II Corinthians 6:17).
