The Days of Noah
“But as the days of Noe were so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come,” Matthew 24:37, 42.
Feasts and festivals have been ongoing since Bible times. The Lord instituted for His people several feasts that were to be held throughout the year. Celebration is a part of God’s plan for man. These feasts were observed as a time of remembrance of what the Lord had done for them in setting them free from Egypt and a time of thanksgiving for all the Lord’s blessings.
It did not take long for celebrations from other cultures to be normalized. The Jews, living under Roman rule, knew all too well of the festivities and banquets which the Romans partook. These were common among both the wealthy and the poor. They involved much eating and dancing but also more illicit behavior. They were driven to give worship and celebration to their gods.
The first feast in America was Thanksgiving and was given to commemorate the bounty of blessings the Lord had given. Now though, this admonition Jesus gave in verse 37 seems to sum up the present times in which we are living. With the mixtures of so many different cultures in America, there is an abundance of celebrations given to respect their traditions and the gods they serve. Hence you have many days of people eating, drinking and making merry, not giving any thought to the times in which they live.
God wants His people to be attentive and on the watch for His coming. His people should not be as the world where they think life is only about these things. “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:15, 16).
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT: Celebrations are good when done within the boundaries which the Lord has given. Time should be given to worship the Lord and serve others, instead of yourself.
