The Many False Gods
“The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands,” Psalm 135:15.
Yesterday’s devotional was using Psalm 135 in declaring that the Lord is good, and He is above all gods. Then there are the few verses comparing the false gods of the nations to the one true God.
In ancient times, they did not have the technology which we have today. So, their idols were carved out of wood or stone and lined with silver and gold. Many were made in the image of man. They did have eyes, ears and a mouth. Yet, they could not see, hear or speak. So, what good were they?
Man has always turned to other men or even himself to worship. They esteemed themselves higher in thought and wisdom than anyone. Unfortunately, this line of thinking keeps you from knowing and worshiping the one true God. It is also hard to admit there may be idols in your life because it is easy to connect the ancient idols with worship, and today men do not often carve images out of wood or stone as an image to worship.
But that does not mean men do not have idols. It is often said that anything you put above God is an idol. It is also claimed that if you go to church and read your Bible then you probably do not have idols in your life. This is not necessarily true. There is much more to serving and worshiping the Lord than church attendance and a little Bible time. A huge part of serving the Lord is also doing for others. The biggest reason for the lack of serving others is the time spent watching or listening to all the fancy technical things we have; television, computer, phones, tablets and now watches.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
It should be said that idle time is not serving and worshiping. How much idle time do you spend on worthless things?
