Whom Shall I Fear?

Fear rises in your throat. It chokes all semblance of rational thought. Senses heighten. Adrenaline grips its mighty hand and every nerve trembles in anticipation of fight or flight. Fear is one of the great drivers of humanity. It shows itself only in these extremes at its height and yet chronically it lingers in the shadows created by our past. It throws its chains of bondage around us and enslaves us to our baser desires.

Such is the power of fear that the Lord assures us He has not given us a spirit of fear upon our conversion but rather a sound mind by which we are free to reason together with our liberator. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).

Such is the power of the gospel that it would cast out fear because there is no fear in love. Such is the love of our Savior that He would cast aside the host of principalities, powers, rulers of darkness in the high places so that each of His children can bask safely in His presence. “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love” (1 John 4:18).

Our loving Father has reconciled us back to Himself through Jesus Christ whose very light casts the shadows aside and saves us from the darkness where we have no place. Strengthened by His might, there is none to be afraid of, simply nothing to fear. “Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness” (1 Thessalonians 5:5).

REFLECTION: May the presence of our Lord, Jesus Christ cast out your fear today.
