David’s Troubles and Testimony

“Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee,” Psalm 86:2.

Almost everyone has heard of the Hatfields and McCoys. It is a textbook example of how conflicts between people can escalate out of control instead of being repaired. Insult breeds insult, harm breeds retaliation and so forth. This even happens within families themselves. Children do not speak to their parents. Siblings do not communicate for years and fight when they do communicate. These things usually happen because of some perceived wrong from the past. In our earthly lives, it seems no one understands restoration with others.

Are we not glad that God does not behave like us? Despite our efforts to make God like us, He remains not like us. God is always ready to restore us to fellowship, and He is also always prepared to come to our assistance in times of distress. That is the case with David here; it seems David was calling on God to be with him through some period of distress.

Our devotional verse almost seems presumptuous on David’s part; he is declaring Himself holy. If you are a saved child of God, you are holy. You may not always behave in a holy manner, nor did David. Yet, in the eyes of God, the sacrifice Jesus made for you has made you pure and holy. We broke our relationship with God by our sins; He restored it through His Son, Jesus. Now, God will never violate that covenant, nor can you be separated from God again. So, if things feel strained between you and God, all you have to do is go to Him in repentance and supplication, and He is there to fix things up.

JUST A THOUGHT
God will never break His covenant with us through Jesus Christ; we can, however, strain our fellowship with Him by our actions.
