Elijah on a Road
“And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, shew thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth. And Elijah went to shew himself unto Ahab. And there was a sore famine in Samaria,” 1 Kings 18:1, 2.
Elijah began a journey that would test his faith and demonstrate the power of God in remarkable ways. The land had been parched by drought, a consequence of Israel’s disobedience. Yet, in the midst of this spiritual and physical dryness, God remained faithful to His prophet and His people. Elijah’s journey began with a command: “Go, shew thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth” (1 Kings 18:1). Despite the risks and challenges, Elijah obeyed, trusting in the promise of God’s provision. As he traveled to meet King Ahab, Elijah’s faith was unwavering; his steps were guided by the assurance of God’s presence.
Along his journey, Elijah encountered Obadiah, a man who remained faithful to God amid the idolatry in the culture. Obadiah’s fear and uncertainty was the complete opposite of Elijah’s steadfast confidence in God’s sovereignty. Yet, even in their differences, both men served God obediently, each fulfilling a unique role in His plan.
Elijah’s encounter with Obadiah reminds us that God’s work often unfolds through unexpected avenues and unlikely allies. We are challenged to remain open to God’s leading, even when it diverges from our expectations or comfort zones. As Elijah and Obadiah journey together, we witness the power of unity in fulfilling God’s purposes. Despite their distinct roles and perspectives, they united in their commitment to God’s will, working together for the greater good.
