The Third Attempt on David’s Life

“And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king’s enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines,” I Samuel 18:25.

God is a protector and defender of all that put their trust in Him. The servants of the Lord have no need to fret over their enemies or any of those that seek their harm. “For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil” (I Peter 3:12). We see this truth throughout the life of David. From fighting wild animals to slaying the mighty giant, Goliath, God had always been with David and protected his life. Now his life was in danger once again as King Saul continued to plot against him.

Saul had devised a manipulative plan against David to have him killed at the hand of the Philistines. He would not be so obvious as throwing a javelin this time around. On the contrary, Saul had made himself appear quite generous in offering his daughter to David to marry. The only requirement was that David kill one hundred of the Philistines and return with their foreskins to present to the king. David did not back down from this challenge but trusted in his God to fight for him once again. Not only did David return unharmed but presented two hundred foreskins of the Philistines doubling the king’s original demand. God had blessed him once again.

While you may not have enemies threatening to take your life, you will face those who falsely accuse you and seek to see you fail. Do not fret or render evil for evil. Trust the Lord and let Him fight for you.

REFLECTION: “And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?” (I Peter 3:13).
