Passing the Torch

Disciples make disciples. Moses had been God’s chosen leader of the Israelites to bring them out of Egyptian bondage and lead them through their wanderings in the wilderness. Now, it was time for God’s new chosen leader, Joshua, to take the helm. Yet, Joshua did not arrive at this moment without a season of training alongside his mentor, Moses.

Joshua had spent years in training walking alongside Moses after God had chosen him to succeed Moses (Deuteronomy 3:28). Joshua was a man of great faith, as seen in his and Caleb’s report after spying out the Promise Land (Numbers 13:1-33). Joshua was a man of humility as seen in his willingness to serve Moses (Exodus 24:13, 33:11). Joshua must have watched in awe for many years as God used Moses to lead Israel through each test and victory in the wilderness. Moses was faithful to prepare Joshua to serve in the calling which God had placed on him.

Every Christian must be discipling and mentoring believers who are younger in the faith to prepare each believer to be a disciple who makes disciples. As Moses faithfully followed God, he was diligent to disciple Joshua and prepare him for the weight of his calling. Moses could have chosen not to be bothered with mentoring and discipling a younger leader. Yet, he diligently poured himself into Joshua as he (Moses) followed God.

JUST A THOUGHT: Who is discipling you? Who are you discipling? You must be faithful to share the gospel and train young believers to be disciples who make disciples.
