The Lord’s Promise to Solomon

“In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee,” 1 Kings 3:5.

This passage may be one of the most profound exchanges between King Solomon and the Lord. This passage contains the encounter in which God appeared to Solomon, offering him the opportunity to ask for whatever he desired. The significance of that moment was not only in Solomon’s response but also in the depth of God’s promises that followed.

Solomon’s reaction revealed his humility and wisdom. Instead of requesting riches, power or long life, Solomon asked for discernment and understanding to govern his people justly. His request demonstrated a heart inclined towards serving his subjects with fairness and wisdom. God seemed to be moved by Solomon’s selfless plea, and not only granted him wisdom but also bestowed upon him riches and honor beyond measure.

In 1 Kings 3:13, God said, “And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.” This promise showcased the generosity of God toward those who seek His guidance and prioritize righteousness. It emphasized the principle that seeking wisdom and righteousness first will lead to the fulfillment of other desires. (See Matthew 6:33.)

The narrative of Solomon’s encounter with God in 1 Kings 3:5 is not merely an historical event but a spiritual lesson for all generations. It teaches the importance of humility, wisdom and seeking God’s guidance in all aspects of life.

THOUGHT

The Lord’s promise to Solomon exemplifies the divine reward for seeking wisdom and righteousness above all else.
