Blood of Dedication

Under the Old Testament Law, there was lots of blood. The Tabernacle was a place of lots of blood. There were basons full of blood, blood sprinkled all around, blood on the priests, blood on the people, blood on the altar and blood on almost everything else. All this blood, what was it for?

The Old Testament Law and the Tabernacle where patterns and shadows, symbolic of good things to come (Hebrews 9:23; 10:1). So, what was all this blood saying? There is no forgiveness without the shedding of blood. The Law said as much. “For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul” (Leviticus 17:11).

But the blood of the animal sacrifices never forgave sins (Hebrews 10:4). Instead, it was foreshadowing the coming “Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). Jesus is “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world” (Revelation 13:8). He is the “lamb without blemish and without spot” (1 Peter 1:19). He is the Lamb who is worshiped in Revelation 5 where the heavenly host sings, “Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation. Worthy is the Lamb that was slain” (Revelation 5:9, 12).

Thought: Jesus shed His blood to forgive our sins.
