The Boast of the Godly
“But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever. I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done it: and I will wait on thy name; for it is good before the saints,” Psalm 52:8, 9.
Many times in witnessing to people, I will hear something like the following: “God and I have a deal made,” or “God knows my heart even if my actions do not show it.” And sometimes I hear the many variations of what they have or have not done. One of my favorite clarifying questions when I encounter these statements is as follows: “Why should you get to enter into Heaven?” This question cuts to the very heart of the salvation question. It brings the listener to the very core of Christianity. If the answer is anything but Jesus and Him alone, we know that this person has not understood the gospel.
The godly person has no room to boast about his salvation. There is no room for talking about accomplishments or achievements or advancements. If our answer to the clarifying question is Jesus paid it all, then we know. There is no room for wondering and doubt. The work has been done or it has not. Jesus has accomplished it or He has not. Because salvation is the work of God, we can have confidence in where we will spend eternity.
In this answer, we have no room to boast in ourselves, but in Jesus alone. We can sing confidently of our salvation. We can speak boldly about our eternal destiny. Jesus is the victor, Jesus is the reason, and Jesus deserves the praise.
REFLECTION
Our security lies in our faith in Jesus and what He has done for us.
