The Supernatural Revelation
“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer,” Psalm 19:14.
Memorize it. Know it deeply. Right along with Jesus’ model prayer and John 3:16. The believer should memorize this passage and pray it daily. For me, it is a daily prayer as I rise from bed and get ready in the morning, guiding my opening thoughts and shaping the rest of my day. It is a prayer for wisdom, a prayer for self-control and for direction through the day, founded upon the wisdom, control and direction of God.
This prayer comes at the conclusion of a psalm that extols the virtue of both natural revelation and supernatural (special) revelation. Natural revelation is, in part, how God makes Himself known through creation (verses 1-6). All people at all times can observe something of the power and divinity of God just by what they observe every day (Romans 1:20). Supernatural revelation is God’s more specific revealing of Himself and His will through direct means such as prophets, theophanies and Scripture. Psalm 19:7-11 extol the wonders and glories of this supernatural revelation of God in His Word. We see multiple names for the Word: Law, testimony, statute, commandment, fear of the Lord and judgments. All of these describe His revealed Scripture and what it does and what it should mean to God’s people.
This prayer of Psalm 19:14 rests upon the universal recognition of God’s glory and the special revelation of who He specifically is. Once we see God in His power, and we know God through His Word, we should desire to speak and think in ways pleasing to God. Knowing God through His revelation, whether natural or supernatural, moves us to worship, and worship should move us to obedience to that revelation.
