The Apostates
“Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?” Psalm 2:1.
The nations (heathen) rage. They really do. They have since the beginning, and they will continue to do so even in the millennial reign of Christ (Revelation 20:7-9). Things were perfect in the garden, and Adam and Eve revolted against the authority of God. After Jesus rules and reigns for one thousand years with perfect peace and prosperity, people as numerous as the sands of the sea will array themselves against Christ.
Why do they (we) rage against God? Why do we continually defy Him and turn against Him? God gives us sufficient intelligence to understand that we are not the ultimate beings in the universe and that there must be someone greater and higher than we are, but He also gives us enough independence and free will to believe otherwise. Normally, when we set ourselves up as the supreme beings, we either kill ourselves off in global war, kill each other off individually to jockey for the highest position in the supreme being pecking order, or we trip and fall, reminding us we are only human. We seem, though, to have such a difficult time learning this, learning our true place in the universe. The human condition of the pre-flood world—“the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Genesis 6:5)—is the same condition of many people in our world today.
God is not silent, and He is not inactive in our rebellion, in our fury and in our rage. He sent His Son to deal with our evil hearts. Praise be to God that He allows us the opportunity to surrender, that He allows us to “kiss the Son” (Psalm 2:12) in this life! Praise be the One, through His beautiful sacrifice, who allows us to be blessed as we take refuge in Him!
REFLECTION
The rage of humans and the love of God meet at the cross where God is satisfied and humans are forgiven.
