Hannah’s Sorrow
“And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the Lord,
so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat,” 1 Samuel 1:7.
From the moment we are born until the day we die, our lives are full of joy and laughter as well as sorrow and pain. If given a choice, we would choose the mountaintops over the valleys without hesitation. And yet, sorrow serves a great purpose in the life of a child of God. Christ Himself is our greatest example of enduring a life of suffering. “He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrow, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not” (Isaiah 53:3).
Hannah had sorrow upon sorrow. The joy of motherhood is beyond compare, whereas the pain of infertility runs just as deep. To add insult to injury, Peninnah would cause her heart to break further with her cruel and insensitive comments. However, Hannah did not let her predicament destroy her. She cried out to the Lord, laid it at His feet and trusted Him fully. After this, God’s Word tells us her countenance was not sad anymore and she was able to eat. Her faith in God had brought
peace.
You may be dealing with great sorrow, pain or grief in your life even now. Although your struggles are difficult to bear, you do not need to bear them alone. You have a wonderful Lord and Savior who is more than able to carry all of your burdens. He understands your pain and sees every tear. Humble yourself before Almighty God, cry out to Him and He will bring peace through the storm that you never thought possible. Allow your times of sorrow to bring you closer to the Savior and therein you will find the greatest purpose of all!
THOUGHT: “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
