The Reconciling Work of Christ

War is terrible, even when it is necessary. Often throughout history two or more countries have entered battle to protect their interests or their citizens. While the destruction of property and economies may be measured, the catastrophic human cost is never fully able to be measured. As wars wane on, the pain and suffering lead the parties involved to make concessions and come to terms of agreement for a peaceful end. However, many of these peace agreements have proven volatile and temporary.

Before Christ, we were sinners at war with God. Paul declares that we are “enemies” (verse 21) of God who we alienated by our wicked works. As bombs being lobbed against an enemy country, so our sin is an attack to the holiness of God. Nothing we could do would bring about true peace with God. We can strive with all our best efforts, yet none of those efforts can ever satisfy a holy God and bring us peace.

But God sent Jesus Christ to make peace by the blood of the cross and make a way for us to be reconciled to Himself. “For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace” (Ephesians 2:14, 15). This peace, unlike peace treaties of man, is sure and unbroken. Jesus Christ brokered an eternal peace treaty on the cross by satisfying the justice of God and thus extending the mercy of God to all mankind. Not only that, but Jesus also presents us holy and unblameable to God because of His sacrifice.

JUST A THOUGHT: Believers have a New Covenant with God through Jesus Christ.
