A Penetrating Question

Coming from the God who is omniscient, all knowing in every way, it seems like the question, “Why have you done this?” is almost a statement of disbelief. It is the equivalent of saying, “Are you crazy?” or “Have you lost your mind?” God has all understanding but like a parent to a child, the statement form of this penetrating question might have been, “that was not very smart!”

The pleasures of sin for a season have the capability of moving sensible people with their passions. It is not just the rare individual that deals with this. It is the common condition for all. “As it is written, there is none righteous, no, not one . . . for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:10, 23). God has made promises throughout the Scriptures to His people. His grace is uncommon and despite our demonstrations of unbelief in the past, He continues to seek our faithfulness. “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it” (1 Corinthians 10:13).

God is the faithful One. He is unchanging throughout time. He shows no partiality. He is always on course and His arrows never miss the mark. This means that He will do what He says every time, and so you must meet the conditions required of His positive promises, to avoid the negative consequences. The choice becomes so simple that it is only unbelief that prevents you from keeping your end of the agreement.

REFLECTION: Do you believe that God will do what he must to maintain his own character?
