The Parable of the Fig Tree
“Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is,” Mark 13:33.
End of the world predictions have been around since the beginning of the world. Does anybody remember the name Harold Camping? He was quite famous some years back for his prophecy that the world would end in 2011. Of course, that was the second date this fellow had set for the end of times. He is not alone. Cults and sects have been setting dates for the end times since the beginning of time. Sometimes adherents will do away with all of their belongings only to find they wish they still had them when the world keeps going. Others end badly, as the mass suicide of thirty-nine members of the Heaven’s Gate cult in California.
We sure love to laugh and cast scorn on those folks do we not? Yet, maybe we should look at ourselves instead. On one hand, many Christians seem to not even believe that Jesus is coming back at all. It has been over two thousand years. Others seem to think there are things we can do to either slow down Jesus’ return or speed it up. If we just make things right down here, Jesus will want to come back! Then there are those who truly believe our Lord is coming back. The problem is they have also stopped working for the kingdom and seem to be just waiting for His return.
Jesus is absolutely coming back. What, then is our response? Which of the above is correct? They are all wrong. What you should be doing is everything He has called you to do, whatever that may be. His return, while definite, is only known to the Heavenly Father. Frankly, it is not our business. Our business is His business, and we need to be about it.
JUST A THOUGHT: Even at His transfiguration, Jesus had to remind His disciples to quit staring after Him and get busy. That is what we should be doing also.
