With What Measure Ye Mete

“And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear; with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given. For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath,” Mark 4:24, 25.

In most of chapter four, Jesus spoke in parables. Jesus spoke this way, not to keep things hidden, but to bring to light hidden things. Throughout Scripture, Jesus would declare, “He that hath an ear, let him hear.” In this passage He said that they should take heed to what they hear. Both statements advise people to understand what was being said.

If a person has a desire to understand and learn, they will. For instance, many times the disciples would ask questions about the things Jesus taught, while others grew agitated by His teachings. The fact that His followers asked questions showed they wanted to learn and understand. The more the disciples sought to understand the more understanding would be given to them. They received understanding to proclaim the truths Jesus taught. Especially, to spread the gospel.

For many, the parables Jesus spoke were obscure in meaning. When Jesus spoke in parables, many did not understand. In this passage, He was teaching that all things hidden will be brought to light. The analogy of not putting a candlestick under a bushel or a bed gives reference to letting your light shine. You let your light shine by learning and growing in the Lord. You only grow by obedience to His Word.

The Bible gives much encouragement for you to grow in the knowledge and understanding of God (Proverbs 2:1-6). If you seek Him through His Word, prayer and obedience, you will grow in your understanding. The Holy Spirit will always teach those who are willing.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT: God’s desire is that you grow. Are you taking the time to seek Him?
