Rejected Cornerstone

In any building that is made of stones, bricks or such, the first one laid is very important. This is the cornerstone, and all other stones laid are laid based on this stone. If the stone is straight and true, then the structure can be also. If the cornerstone is strong and solid, then the structure can be. Inherently, the opposite is true as well, a crooked or weak cornerstone results in a crooked and weak structure.
This same principle is true in human life as well. A life built on a solid foundation can be straight, true, solid and strong. In our devotional passage, we see Jesus being described as the cornerstone. Lives built on Jesus will be solid; lives built on any other stone will ultimately collapse and fall.
The Jews of the time rejected Jesus Christ and refused to see Him as their Messiah; as the verse tells us, the builders themselves disallowed the true cornerstone. We love to point fingers at them do we not? We love to talk about those lousy Pharisees who persecuted, rejected and finally called for the death our Lord. We can be quite smug about it.
Nothing ever really changes. The vast majority of people today act the same way. They persecute, reject and metaphorically kill Christ every day. He offers us the chance to make a different choice; we can accept His gift of salvation and live, or we can reject it and die. We see this in our devotional passage. He is precious to those who believe, but a stumbling block to those who reject. What is He to us?

JUST A THOUGHT: Are you standing on the solid Rock?
