The Military
“Now the children of Israel after their number, to wit, the chief fathers and captains of thousands and hundreds, and their officers that served the king in any matter of the courses, which came in and went out month by month throughout all the months of the year, of every course were twenty and four thousand,” 1 Chronicles 27:1.
As a child, David killed different animals that threatened his sheep. His bravery made him a good shepherd. His first entrance into the military life was through Goliath’s challenge. He simply stumbled upon this battle, and his bravery made him victorious. As he grew up and served Saul, he became strengthened in the Lord and became a mighty warrior. His bravery made him dependable. Running from Saul in the wilderness, he was cunning and skillful, but his bravery made others loyal to him. David’s bravery stemmed from a complete dependence on the Lord.
David’s bravery throughout his reign was infectious. He could rally his troops to defeat any enemy. He led by example and surrounded himself with like-minded men. The mighty men of David are mentioned several times throughout Scripture. These were his closest military servants and the captains of the troops. He trusted them with his life and depended on them in times of need. In this section of Scripture, we also see how organized David was. He rotated his guard each month and left them in the charge of his mighty men.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
May our bravery be rooted in the power of our Heavenly Father, and our example spur others to stand for Jesus Christ.
