The Command of David

“Even as I sware unto thee by the Lord God of Israel, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; even so will I certainly do this day,” 1 Kings 1:30.

Have you ever told your pastor what he should preach? In twenty-plus years of ministry, I have had it happen a couple of times. Those members did not tell me exactly what to say, but they were pretty demanding about the topics they thought I should preach. I may be old fashioned, but I believe the Holy Spirit still leads, and I would much prefer to preach what God wants me to preach. Unfortunately, some people think the preacher should listen to them instead of listening to God.

God had promised David that his son Solomon would build the house of God, and He promised David that Solomon would reign on the throne after David (1 Chronicles 22:9, 10). Adonijah, another of David’s sons, desired to be king, and had set things in motion to assume the throne. The Bible tells us Adonijah “exalted himself, saying, I will be king” (1 Kings 1:5). He had even started assembling his servants (including David’s other sons, as well as Joab and Abiathar the priest). Adonijah thought he could take advantage of David’s old age and establish himself as king. His plot could have been successful, if not for one glaring flaw: it was not what God wanted.

God wanted Solomon to be king. David told the Israelite people, “And of all my sons, (for the Lord hath given me many sons,) he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel” (1 Chronicles 28:5). God had a plan for Solomon, and David knew that plan. David had Zadok the priest anoint Solomon as king (1 Kings 1:39). It did not matter what Adonijah wanted. It only mattered what God wanted, and David understood that.

JUST A THOUGHT
Never sabotage God’s plan for your life. Only trust Him.
