Simon’s Selfish Request

The power of God exhibited by Holy Spirit during the Apostle’s ministry was certainly mesmerizing and awesome to see. For the one who desired to know God and to serve Him, this power was humbling and encouraging. But for men like Simon, who were unregenerate and self-serving men, the power of God was something to be harnessed for personal gain.

As the Apostle’s carried out the work of God, many people experienced healing and restorative miracles. These miracles were intended to show people the mighty power of God and to draw them to Christ. At times, people tried to give glory to the Apostles themselves because they were in awe at what they had seen. Yet, the Apostles always pointed people to Christ and refused any personal praise.

Simon was a wicked man who dealt in sorcery and witchcraft as a way of making an income. His ability to control people and perform miracles would not even compare to the power of God seen through the Apostles. Simon was awestruck at the miracles he saw when people received the Holy Spirit by laying of hands. Simon saw a business opportunity and sought to purchase the power of God with money to expand his corporate brand.

Many still today dabble in a false religion in the name of God and have bewitched people into following them as Simon did. They play on the needs and emotions of vulnerable people and speak in the name of God while twisting Scripture to suit their agenda. As Peter declared to Simon, these will face the condemnation of God if they do not repent of their wickedness and turn to the truth of God’s Word.

Reflection: God’s power and blessing is not a bartering tool to be used for personal gain. God gives power to the humble and obedient Christian who serves in meekness.
