God and His Foolish Foes

“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good. .... Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one,” Psalm 53:1, 3.

War is nasty business but has been a part of our world since early in history. Because of atrocities during war, a group of treaties known as the Geneva Conventions laid down rules of warfare and how people and prisoners are to be treated. The last of these treaties was brought about in 1949 at the end of World War II. During this war, Hitler and his armies sought to destroy the Jewish people off the earth. Hitler also wanted to control people by controlling religion and changing the Bible to bring it in line with his ideology. He is not the only person, country or ideology that has tried to get rid of God’s Word or restrict people from serving and worshiping the Lord. What they all do not realize is that they will never be able to get rid of God’s Word or His people.

We see in this psalm of David that the first and foremost problem is that God’s foes have been so foolish as to say that there is no God. Because they do not believe in God, they seem to be more willing to be involved in such an abominable iniquity (verse 1). But God looked down to see if there were any that did seek Him (verse 2) but saw that there were not any that did good (verse 3). The enemies of God will always be fools because they refuse to acknowledge who He is or seek Him (verse 4): “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1:7).

THOUGHT
Like He preserves His Word and His people, God will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5).
