David’s Description of True Worship

“Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?” Psalm 15:1.

The story of Scripture is a story of the role of grace and Law in the lives of the followers of God. On one hand, we see the free-flowing grace of God toward His people, forgiving us, dwelling with us and loving us. He is kind and patient with us in our sin and our rebellion. We know that God is not able to bear sin, unrighteousness or lawlessness. We also know that He expects His people to follow His Word.

David asked who can abide in the Tabernacle, and who can truly worship God. Verses 2-5 depict a person who is following the Law of God, who is exhibiting love for God and for others. We see a practical painting of the one who follows God with all his heart and soul. The problem with this verse, though, is that David seldom lived up to this. Sometimes he failed to love God and to love his neighbor. And so do you, and so do I.

The story of the Bible is the story of God drawing near to us, but we cannot draw near to Him because of our sinfulness.

This is where Jesus steps in. Where we fail to love the Lord with our heart, soul, mind and strength, He did it perfectly. Where we fail to keep the Law, He did it flawlessly. Where we rebel, He obeyed completely. Where we sin, He lived righteously. Both the Law of God and the grace of God lead us to live like verses 2-5, but Jesus gives us a way to actually do it—in Him and through Him. Just as He took our place on the cross to bear our sins, He bestows His righteousness on us so that we might become righteous in Him.

REFLECTION
Imputation brings peace, crediting our sin to Jesus’ account, and crediting Jesus’ righteousness to our account.
