The Lord Gives David His Desires
“Thou hast given him his heart’s desire, and hast not withholden the request of his lips. Selah. His glory is great in thy salvation: honour and majesty hast thou laid upon him,” Psalm 21:2, 5.
Have you ever asked for something for Christmas or a birthday when you were a child and when the day came around, you got that special gift? How did you feel? We are never sad when we get that for which we asked, but we are glad and thankful that we received exactly what we requested. Sometimes, we even grow to regret that request because it turns out not to be what we really need or what will satisfy us. The old adage, “Be careful what you ask for because you might get it,” is not the case in this psalm of David because his desires were needed and brought him great joy.
This psalm seems to be in response to David’s prayer in Psalm 20 and lets it be known that God gave him his request (verse 2). God had gone before him with blessings of goodness and put a crown of gold on his head (Psalm 21:3) because it is the Lord that put him on the throne and blessed him and not David himself. David had asked for his life, but God delivered him with more than just physical life; he also received eternal life (verse 4), and he realized that his own glory was great through the salvation of the Lord (verse 5). Because of blessing him with more than he even could ask, he stated, “For thou hast made him most blessed for ever: thou hast made him exceeding glad with thy countenance” (verse 6).
JUST A THOUGHT
What is keeping you from receiving what you ask of the Lord?
“If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you” (John 15:7).
