Eli's Sons Are Guilty of Immorality

“Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation,” I Samuel 2:22.

There are certain things in this world that absolutely do not mix well together no matter how hard we may try. For instance, water and oil do not make a good combination. Light and darkness cannot even coexist in the same place at the same time. But perhaps nothing is more diametrically opposed to the other than a holy God and the sin of immorality.

Eli’s sons were in a position of authority in the temple and held great responsibility to represent their father well; but more importantly they were representatives of God. Rather than upholding their priestly duties with honor, they were committing adultery with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle and it was well known amongst God’s people. How shameful that these men having been set apart for a holy purpose would degrade themselves and the temple worship with their blatant immorality and cause the people to sin.

As members of the Lord’s New Testament church, we too have been set apart for a holy purpose. We live in a wicked world where sexual sins of every kind are glorified and celebrated. God forbid that we conform to this wickedness, turn a blind eye and allow immorality to come in and desecrate the House of God. Paul told the church in Corinth that a little leaven leavens the whole lump. Jesus purchased His church with His own blood and it is precious. Each of His churches must be kept pure and as church members that starts with you and with me. May we turn away from immoral sin and purify our lives, holy and set apart for our Lord Jesus Christ.

REFLECTION: “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” (I Corinthians 6:20)
