The Selection of Matthias

Most people loved the game of tug-of-war as children. This game teaches us things. More than anything, tug-of-war teaches teamwork. The players on a team who want to win must work together in harmony and unison; doing this well increases the strength of five persons exponentially. They can pull with the power of more bodies than the sum of the individual parts. On the other hand, not being in harmony and unison has the opposite effect. Normally, the team with the best ability to work in accord wins the game.
In our passage, we see the disciples working in harmony to accomplish the Lord’s business. In this case, the disciples had been commissioned to appoint an apostle to replace Judas, the betrayer. What a great example the gathered believers set here! They prayed over the issue, they decided how the business would be conducted, and, then, they conducted it. That is how we are commanded to do things in the Lord’s churches. “Let all things be done decently and in order” (1 Corinthians 14:40).
Sadly, this example is not always followed in our churches today; history shows that it often has not been. We see churches split over insignificant issues, such as the proverbial color of the carpet. Churches even appear in the news when the secular legal system becomes involved. If we desire to be Christlike, then this is not how things should be. In any given situation, God has one plan. The only question is whether we, as corporate bodies, execute this plan. Failure to do this impedes God’s business and is a poor testimony to the world. How do we do this? Prayer and supplication are great places to start!

JUST A THOUGHT: God always has one perfect plan. He never has contingency plans setup. Our goal must be to seek and to do this plan.
