The Servant and His Master
“Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens. Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us; for we are exceedingly filled with contempt,” Psalm 123:1, 3.
“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth” (Colossians 3:1, 2). These verses are an admonition to keep your heart on the Lord. Keep your desires on heavenly things. Though you are in this world, it is temporary and has nothing good to offer. All through the Psalms you see how many times the writers lifted up their eyes. Now we should look at the cross and see the goodness and mercy God has given to us.
“Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am” (John 13:13). Many people in the Old Testament had slaves. The job of those slaves was to pay attention to the master’s hands for any indication the master would want something. They were always waiting to obey at the slightest signal given. Their job was to wait on the master. Jesus is our Master. We are to look to Him because He is our example of service. God gives us mercy through Jesus every day.
“But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved)” (Ephesians 2:4, 5). The Israelites constantly cried out for mercy. Sometimes, it was for their own disobedience that they needed mercy, and sometimes, it was because they were despised or shamed because of their beliefs in Jehovah. God has shown great mercy to all of us in the death of His Son. He continues to give us mercy daily.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
Be aware of the mercy of God by setting your heart on Him, knowing He has given us an example to follow in Jesus.
