What and How To Sing
“Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise. Sing unto the Lord with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm. With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the Lord, the King,” Psalm 98:4-6.
As a child, my mother taught us to sing together from a young age. I remember many Saturdays being called in from playing outside to practice our special song for Sunday. Begrudgingly, we would take our turn at her Yamaha piano learning our individual parts until mother would bring us all together to sing three-part harmony. Our mother taught us to sing skillfully and joyfully, but most of all, she shaped our hearts to sing for the Lord while helping us to understand the deep meanings of the words we were singing.
Much like my mother, the psalmist calls us to sing loudly and joyfully to the Lord and play a variety of musical instruments in worship. The Bible gives us thorough instructions in worship so that we lack nothing in our praise to God. God has given us a voice with which we can sing praises to Him. He has given us a mind to process the deep truths of His Word which move us to worship. God has given us musical instruments with which we can practice our skills and play our best for Him.
We serve a creative God who loves music and gave it to us to honor Him with our praise. If you cannot find a pitch to save your life, sing joyfully anyway. If you never learned to play an instrument, clap your hands (Psalm 47:1) and lift your voice in worship. If you have no discernable rhythmic ability, stomp your foot in erratic beats as you lift your voice in praise.
REMINDER
No matter your musical ability, give your very best praise to God. He is worthy.
