VBS Planning: Start in the Fall

With school having resumed, and the chaos of summer vacation in the rearview mirror, now is the perfect time to start planning for next year’s Vacation Bible School. Many churches have already decided who will serve as their VBS directors for next year. (If your church has not decided yet, talk to someone about getting the decision on the agenda for the next business meeting!) With VBS materials going on sale at Bogard Press in October, decisions will need to be made pretty soon to make the most of the time. Here are some tips to help you start planning for VBS 2025:

  1. Pray.

Ask God for wisdom and provision of resources, volunteers and a cooperative spirit among the church members.

  2. Reflect.

How did last year’s VBS go? Is there anything that should be changed, removed or added for next year?

  3. Refocus.

Reiterate the overall purpose of VBS: planting the seed of the gospel and making disciples of Jesus Christ.

  4. Budget.

What will the church plan to spend for VBS? What resources will you have to spend, and what will have to be provided by volunteers?

  5. Shop.

VBS Sample Kits include a sampling of resources, but aside from what’s included in the kit, you will need to shop the catalog to see which elements you will need.

  6. Envision.

Dream big about how to make VBS 2025 the biggest hit possible. Even if something seems outrageous, write it down and talk it out with others.

  7. Schedule.

Set target dates for each decision that needs to be made leading up to VBS. Write the dates down in your calendar.

  8. List.

Write down every volunteer position needed for the best VBS possible. Make it a big list, making room for everyone who may want to work.

  9. Recruit.

The best time to start talking to volunteers is now! Get early verbal commitments from church members and schedule a meeting with them as soon as possible.

  10. Study.

It is not too early to begin familiarizing yourself with the VBS 2025 theme and studying the passages of Scripture to make them come alive to students.

Fall is the perfect time to begin planning for Vacation Bible School. May God bless you for all your labor to reach people with the gospel!
