What is Vacation Bible School and why should my church host a VBS?
For more than one hundred years, churches have been hosting Vacation Bible Schools. What started as a summertime option for intensive Bible training for children has morphed into various models of activity-based, immersive experiences based upon God’s Word. VBS is a designated time set aside by churches and ministries to serve students in special ways, providing opportunities to learn God’s Word through a variety of activities. Typically, Vacation Bible School is based upon a theme, and all the activities—lessons, crafts, games, music, skits and snacks—are designed to help students experience the love of God as revealed in His Word.
The goal of VBS is life transformation. Churches use VBS to help students experience the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. This is why churches should consider hosting a Vacation Bible School. It gives churches an opportunity to transform their buildings into creative spaces designed to impact the lives of students. VBS immerses children in an environment where they can exert all their focus and energy on the Word of God and have an encounter with God Himself.
VBS takes a lot of work, but most churches consider the investment worthwhile. Parents are often looking for opportunities to help their children grow during the summer months, and VBS provides that opportunity. If you are not planning to host a VBS next summer, please consider doing so. VBS can be a lot of fun for children and adults as well.
Vacation Bible School provides a tremendous opportunity for your church to grow in unity, faith, outreach and in number. If you are not sure where to begin for your next VBS, let Bogard Press help! Check our website for all the VBS resources you will need for a successful VBS.
