Bogard Press VBS Blog - Crumby Churches

Crumby Churches

My church is very crumby. Now before you have a case of mistaken identity, I am not harking on my church at all. This is a good thing, that the church is crumby. I mean it can be really crumby at times. Some people may not like it, but I do. To me, the crumbier, the better. Confused? My church has a lot of kids, and what do kids do? They eat and leave crumbs everywhere. This is a great thing.

I used to have the privilege of maintaining the buildings at a church of which I was a member. One of my duties at the church was to vacuum and pick up in between the pews. Many times, I left from cleaning with a pocket full of Goldfish, Teddy Grahams and candy wrappers. I used to get upset at the mess the kids would leave, but I started thinking. These children would soon be young Christians, and they are the life of the church. They are the sustaining present and the future establishment of on-fire Christians.

Think about it. Without children in the church, does the church have a future? Everybody will die at one point in time. If there is no one to take their place, then the church will die. The children in our churches are the future soul winners, evangelists, missionaries, Sunday school teachers, choir members, musicians, preachers and prayer warriors. Without children, as in the days of the Judges, who will stand in the gap?

I no longer have the role of cleaning the buildings, but I am very thankful we have many children on Sunday for Sunday School, on Wednesday for our midweek program and throughout Vacation Bible School. I did not mind cleaning up after them knowing that these kids are hearing the Word of God and being fed the sincere milk of the Word. My pastor agrees. He would like to see more and more. The more the merrier. So, the more crumbs, the better.

This coming summer many churches have the opportunity to become extremely crumby. There will be an onslaught of pockets full of crumbs from children who will attend churches with a VBS program all over the world. These crumby churches have the chance in a lifetime to sing the praises of our wonderful Savior to children who may never again hear the gospel. They will hear the words of Christ as they drop their crumbs. Think of those crumby children who will be saved, whose lives will be forever changed.

If your church does not have many crumbs, then there may be a problem in your church. No crumbs (children) means no future, and no future means more will not see of the glorious light of the Gospel. If your church does not like children for any number of reasons, then first, pray for them. Prayer changes things, even the hardest of hearts. Whoever you may be, pray for your church to be crumby. Crumbs are good.
