David’s Throne

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this,” Isaiah 9:6, 7.

Every story has a backstory. Superman came from Krypton. Batman lost his parents while young. We find this in good novels, in good movies and even in our own families. This is true also of the greatest story ever told. Baby Jesus did not come from nowhere. Jesus was born of the lineage of David to rule from David’s throne forever and ever.

We often read this passage at Christmas time. This promise speaks of the coming of Jesus, of His reign and of His ruling over the earth. This promise was based on an even earlier promise made to David in 2 Samuel

7. Jesus’ first coming did not come out of nowhere. God had been laying the groundwork ever since Genesis 3:15. As God worked out history to make it lead to Jesus, God promised David that he would have a throne or a ruling family lineage forever and ever. And even though God did cause David’s lineage to be in existence for many centuries, He fulfilled that promise specifically in Jesus, who came declaring that all should repent because the kingdom of Heaven was at hand. Even though the people of Israel rejected their promised King, His promised reign is not over. Jesus came the first time to offer the kingdom, but when he comes again, he will rule as the head of the house of David over all the earth.

REFLECTION: The gospel declares that the King has come, and He has come for you.
