David’s Champions

“These also are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, and with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the Lord concerning Israel,” 1 Chronicles 11:10.

David had recently been anointed king over Israel (1 Chronicles 11:3), and now the Israelites found themselves engaged in several battles. Chapters 11 and 12 of 1 Chronicles contain many descriptive terms of Israel’s military leaders. God’s Word calls them “mighty men” (1 Chronicles 12:1), “valiant men” (1 Chronicles 11:26), “honorable” men (verse 21) and “men of war” (1 Chronicles 12:8), just to name a few. These great men and their armies were tasked with helping King David defeat his enemies.

It is important for us to surround ourselves with supportive people. The physical and spiritual battles we face can be overwhelming at times. In 2 Timothy 2:2, Paul instructed Timothy to seek out and commit what he had learned to “faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” This reminds us of the importance of relying on others for help. Hopefully, if you are facing a challenge or persecution, you have faithful, mighty and honorable brothers or sisters in Christ you can approach for help. As great as David’s “helpers of the war” (1 Chronicles 12:1) were, the Israelites and their military leaders were only successful because God was with them. David needed the help of these men, but more importantly, he needed God’s help. Romans 8:31 reminds us, “What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?”

Too many people try to fight life’s battles on their own, and many fail because they do not rely on the help of others and God. Trust Him for guidance.
